Announcing Free Use Photos - A New Flickr Group

How often do you need a quick photo to illustrate a point or concept? Are you ever concerned about the copyright restrictions? Well look no further!

Inspired by Michael Casey and his 50 Reasons Not to Change post (and the comments that followed). Tony Tallent and I have created a Flickr group called Free Use Photos where all the photos are free and can be used with no restrictions.

We encourage everyone in the library and education communities to join and share photos that can be used for displays, presentations, blogs, or any other imaginable use. Tony has already added some great photos to the group that will give you an idea of what we are looking for.

Flickr Group for NC Libraries

A new Flickr group has been created for North Carolina Libraries. If you have any photos of NC Libraries add the tag “NC Libraries” and they will show up in the group. You can also join the group by clicking the “Join Group” link on the bottom right corner of the screen once you are logged in and viewing the group.

Week 5 Thing 10: Online Image Generators

Wow! I could literally spend all night playing with these online image generators. I wish I had more time…sigh.

Helene posted a link to a great Blog, The Generator Blog. If you scroll down on the right sidebar you will see a list of the the generators this site has blogged about.

The first one I found pretty quickly in one of the recent posts, Newspaper Headline Generator. My headline finally made the front page!

Next I looked for something a little more serious and found the George Says Generator.

Finally to be fair and balanced, I found one of our former next president the Hillary Says Generator.

The fun part of this is that you get to choose from dozens of photos and some of the expressions, like poor Hillary’s, are just priceless.

Week 3 Things 5 & 6: Flickr

I’ve had a Flickr account for a while now and it’s been great for sharing photos with family and friends. I agree with jwdettel, the uploading limits are frustrating, but I still like Flickr because I can send links to family and friends and they don’t need to create an account to view the photos.

Flickr is also great for eBay. Instead of paying eBay to host photos of your items for auction, you can insert a link to a Flickr photo instead.

You can make Flickr uploading easier by downloading and installing the Flickr Uploading Tool. This lets you drag and drop photos into Flickr and automatically resizes them for you so that you don’t max out on your monthly quota.

Speaking of Flickr, I just found my son on the cover of a magazine!

Librarian Trading Cards

Just for fun …

In case you haven’t heard there’s a new action figure out there called the Deluxe Librarian which features yet another minature clone of Nancy Pearl. Unlike the 1st edition of the Librarin action figure, the deluxe issue comes with a minature PC and a cart of reference books for lighting speed retrieval of information.

Of course, not every librarian is lucky enough like Nancy (BTW: She even has her own website) to get our own action figure, but you can create your very own Librarian Trading Card and join the gallery.

To participate:

  1. Create your own trading card here
  2. Then upload your card to your free Flickr account and add the keyword tag “librariantradingcards” to the image so that it can join the gallery

View the Librarian Trading Card Gallery.
